Organize Your Bedroom

Your bedroom is your nightly sanctuary.  The bedroom is also a place where clothes pile up and clutter abounds for most of us.  Therefore, let's try to implement a sense of calm and serenity by tidying and organizing it.

After trying these tips, you should see a noticeable difference in the "feel" of your room.  By taking away the heaps and clutter, your mind will naturally start to relax your mind as well!

  1. Start by looking at the loose clothes floating around your room.  Gather them up and sort them into piles for "wash", dry cleaning" and closet.  After doing this, place all dirty clothes into the hamper for washing, load all the clothes for the cleaners into your car, and the rest should be folded or hung on a hanger.
  2. Closets can be a difficult if not overwhelming job to organize.  If you're not in the market for a closet company to come in and professionally install a system, then consider some of the following ideas...
  3. Take everything out of your closet.  Yes, EVERYTHING.  Now you need to sort once again.  Pile things into "Love It/Keep It", "Charity", and "Toss."  A good rule of thumb is, if you haven't worn it in the last 2 years you probably never will again, so toss it!  Fashions change and so do our bodies over time.  Unless it is a classic, expensive piece you should consider donating it to charity or file it under "G" for garbage.
  4. If you can afford it, buy some inexpensive shoe shelves at a local home improvement center or home organization store.  (Ikea sells a great wooden 2-shelf shoe rack for under $10).  This way you can actually see what you own and store them at the bottom of the closet easily.
  5. Place all your jackets and blazers on nice wooden and/or heavy plastic hangers and hang them in one area.  All blouses and shirt get hung up as well as pants and skirts.  Use pant hangers to avoid the crease wire hangers cause.
  6. Fold all t-shirts and sweaters and pile them accordingly.  Then you can place them on the upper shelf or in an appropriate drawer.  You can also purchase addition storage stations for inside the closet that don't require you to be a handyman for assembly.  Gather up purses and neatly place them above your clothes or at the bottom if you have room.
  7. If you have a hook on the back of the closet door, buy an inexpensive belt hanger so that you can see all your belts easily.  Or you can place small nails inside your closet wall to hang them up.  Think of your closet as a mini-clothes store and you are the customer - make it nice and easy for yourself to view your things each day!

Now that your closet looks great you can move on to cleaning up the drawers.   The following tips will help you tackle this project with ease...

  1. Once again, remove everything from the drawer(s) so that you can see and analyze your belongings.  Start grouping your items (i.e. accessories, socks/hose, lingerie, t-shirts, sweaters etc.).
  2. Decide what you really need and want to keep and toss out the rest.  Now is a good time to decide if you need to upgrade undergarments - toss out anything with stains and holes.
  3. Refold what you are keeping and place all things together - i.e. sweaters go in one drawer, lingerie in another.  You can even place scented drawer liner in each drawer to keep your things smelling fresh.  Small sachets of potpourri or your scent is another great way to spruce up these areas inexpensively.  Makes you feel fresh and pretty too!
  4. For accessories, buy yourself an acrylic or plastic divided tray (available at dollar stores really cheap!).  This way you can place earrings, necklaces, bracelets and brooches in a way that you can see them and access them hassle-free.  Saves you time in the morning too.

Now that your room is taking shape and looking better, hopefully you are feeling better about it too!  Some other ideas to freshen up the look of your bedroom are:

  • Make up your bed with fresh, clean sheets and linens. Consider using Febreze spray daily on your bedding to keep it odor-free and smelling great.
  • Think about adding some throw pillows on your bed.
  •  Add a chenille blanket folded at the bottom of the bed for great flair.
  • Place a glass vase with fresh flowers next to your nightstand. (Inexpensive vases at Pier One, Ikea).
  • Add a room freshener outlet in your favorite scent. Lavender is a great one to calm you.
  • Place your favorite magazines or books on your "to read" list on the nightstand. Reading before bed helps stimulate better sleep.
  • Remove computers, gym equipment and anything else not sleep related from your bedroom. After all, you want to relax here not gear up.
  • Dust and vacuum your bedroom and you will have a respite fit for the queen that you are!
